As a child growing up in Somalia, I vividly remember the chaotic scenes of armed men patrolling the streets, their guns a constant reminder of the turmoil that engulfed our nation. It was a time of uncertainty, where violence and conflict seemed to be the norm, leaving civilians like myself bewildered and scared. As I reflect on those memories, I realize that understanding the security situation in Somalia is like trying to solve a riddle—a complex puzzle with no easy answers.
Since the collapse of our government, Somalia has faced a myriad of challenges, from civil war to terrorism. Lives have been lost, families torn apart, and countless individuals forced to flee their homes in search of safety. It’s a tragedy that continues to haunt us to this day.
The question that often lingers in my mind is why? Why are people who share the same religion, the same blood, the same culture, and the same identity fighting against each other? It’s a riddle that I struggle to answer, even as an adult. But amidst the chaos and despair, there is hope.
With the support of the international community, Somalia has embarked on a journey of state-building—a slow and arduous process, but progress nonetheless. Yet, the biggest challenge we face today is the lack of security.
To understand the current security situation in Somalia, one must delve into the country’s turbulent history. Decades of civil war, political turmoil, and the absence of effective governance have created a breeding ground for armed groups, tribal conflicts, and widespread insecurity.
Despite the efforts of Somalia and its international partners, security remains elusive. We have a sizable military and police force, as well as intelligence agencies, but security continues to be an obstacle. I believe part of the problem lies in our flawed understanding of how to build a secure nation.
True security cannot exist without justice. Within our society, there must be fairness and transparency, especially within our security forces. Too often, officers are promoted based on tribal affiliations and political connections rather than merit. This injustice breeds resentment and undermines the morale of our soldiers.
Furthermore, corruption within the ranks deprives our brave men and women of their rightful salaries, leaving them unable to provide for their families. Without the trust and support of the people they serve, our security forces struggle to maintain peace and order.
While progress has been made, significant challenges remain on the path to lasting stability and prosperity. Addressing the root causes of insecurity, promoting good governance, and ensuring the participation of all stakeholders in the peace process are essential steps toward achieving sustainable peace in Somalia.
The security situation in Somalia is complex and multifaceted, shaped by historical legacies, internal conflicts, and external interventions. Yet, amidst the darkness, there is a glimmer of hope. With concerted efforts and a commitment to justice and transparency, Somalia can overcome its security challenges and embark on a path of peace and development.
To achieve upright security, there is no room for compromising or retreating from corruption, tribalism, and individual interests. We must be serious about our own reality.
